Shirley Thomas

I was born and raised in Alabama. I am a graduate of North Carolina Central University with a B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences. I have also earned two Associates Degrees with certifications as a Medical Assistant and Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA). I have worked in healthcare and in public and private education. I enjoy watching action movies and shows like CSI and NCIS, taking long walks, spending time with my husband and two beautiful daughters, and enjoying holidays with extended family. My favorite vacation destination is the beach, especially the Caribbean.

I have worked with Duke Access Services as an appointment coordinator and referral specialist. I have also worked with Duke PRMO as a Financial Care Counselor. I am excited to work with DukeWELL to build a healthier community by assisting with coordination of preventive care.

I have worked in a OB-GYN office for 12 years. During that time, I took some billing classes and obtained my CPC license. I worked as a OB-GYN coder for 5 years and decided I wanted to have more patient contact, and that is why I decided to come to DukeWELL. I am a mom of two boys—one is a senior, and the other is in 8th grade. We keep very busy with sports and church.

I started with Duke in March of 2019 as a Financial Care Counselor at Duke Eye Center. During that time, it was my responsibility to work with patients to resolve any financial barriers related to their healthcare. I am excited to be a part of the DukeWELL team as a Senior Care Coordinator. I have always had a passion to help people and my community. It’s exciting to be a part of a team that shares that same passion. In 2024, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Bryan School of Business and Economics at UNC Greensboro.

I have been employed by Duke for over 20 years. I began my career in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Office in August 2000. I transitioned to the Duke Talent Identification Program in October, 2013. In January 2021, I started a new career in Population Health as a Care Coordinator. I look forward to making a difference in the overall health of the patients and communities Duke serves.
